Spring and Summer Health Tips for Your Pet – Removing Ticks

Posted on May 17th, 2010 by admin

There are several ways to remove the tick from your dog. You can try pulling gently on the tick until the head releases from the dog. This does not always work well. You may want to use a tweezers when you do this to ensure that the tick does not bite you. Oftentimes the tick persistently holds on and when you finally pull hard enough, the body of the tick frees up in your fingers while the head remains firmly embedded in the skin. This often causes inflammation and a small red bump to appear at the original site of the tick bite. Because of the threat of Lyme disease, it is important to remove the tick before it has been embedded for 24 hours. This will help in with preventing Lyme disease from infecting a dog. O’TOM TICK TWISTER

Posted on April 13th, 2010 by admin

Why is removing a tick correctly so important?

Compressing the body of the tick can cause its saliva and gut contents to be squeezed out of the tick and back into the bloodstream of the host. Infective organisms can be transferred this way.

Using fiddly impliments can prolong tick removal and stress the tick. This can cause it to regurgitate its stomach contents along with any infective organisms.

DO NOT freeze, burn, or smother the tick with petrolium jelly, alcohol, or other substances, because this will also stress the tick and can cause it to regurgitate.

DO NOT scratch off or crush a tick because it can leave bits behind in the skin and spill the saliva and gut contents which can result in infection.

The steps to safely removing a tick start with a pointy tick removal tweezer. Most household tweezers have large, blunt tips in comparison to ticks. This only increases the chances of tearing the tick and spreading possible infections into the bite area.

Steps to removing a Tick safely :
* Use a pointy tick removal tweezer
* Disinfect with rubbing alcohol
* Grab tick close to skin and use slow, steady motion to pull tick out
* Disinfect again
* Consider tick testing for infection
