Doggy Tear Stain Removal help…….And another quick question….?

Posted on July 13th, 2010 by admin

I FOUND A DOG SUNDAY ROAMING THE STREETS. BOTH MGRS @ PETCO & PET SUPERMARKET SAID IT POSSIBLY CAN BE A MALTESE ;)
IVE CHECKED THE LOCAL PET SHELTERS & WEBSITES..NOTHING SEEMS TO COME UP.SO IM KEEPING HIM. WHEN MY HUSBAND& I SAW HIM IT ONLY TOOK ONE WHISTLE & HE JUMPED INTO MY CAR. HES VERY SHY & THAT SUNDAY LOOKED LIKE A HOTT MESS. SOMEONE CUT HIS HAIR W/ SCISSORS ( TO TAKE OFF KNOTS)BUT LEFT HIM ALL PATCHY.
HE WAS COLD, STARVED NOT TO MENTION HAD FLEAS UP THE @SS! =\
WE IMMEDIATELY WENT TO PET SUPERMARKET, BOUGHT HIM FOOD & ADAM’S TICK & FLEA REMOVAL SHAMPOO. TOOK HIM HOME WASHED HIM DOWN….ALL FLEAS WERE GONE & MY HUSBANS SHAVED HIM BALD…. HE WAS 2 PATCHY LOL & HAD KNOTS. ANYWHO, I HAVE A VET APPT NEXT WEEK. BUT MEANWHILE, HE HAS BAD TEAR STAINS & SINCE FLEAS ATE HIM UP, HAS SCABS THE HE KEEPS PICKING & CHEWING ON. WHAT CAN I DO? ANY SUGGESTIONS 4 ANYTHING? HOME REMEDIES? WILL HE STOP BEING SO SHY?! I LOVE HIM ALREADY. HES NEUTERED LOOKS BOUT 2YRS OLD. ALWAYS SHAKING.
MORE ANSWERS PLEASE…. ADVICE… REMEDIES…. OPINIONS =)

Surely after he’s gotten to know you, he will stop being shy, but give him some time and he’ll warm up to you. :)

Tear stain removal is best with warm water. The chemicals don’t do all what they say, so just rub with warm water.

Also, the scabs, the vet may give you something to help him with.

Unsuccessful tick removal — please help?

Posted on July 7th, 2010 by admin

I just tried to remove a tick from my cat. I followed the instructions I read on-line, but I think I just crushed the tick and can’t remove the head. I swabbed the area with alcohol. What should I do? Because of the holiday, I can’t take my cat to the vet until Tuesday. What can I do in the meantime?

Dont worry too much! I dont think a trip to the vet will necessary unless it swells up into a huge ball or weeps (or any other bad symptoms). Just keep applying the alcohol a few times each day, check for any infection and leave it to come out on its own.
Dont worry if the area is red – it will be alittle itchy for the cat.
As you can see from these websites there is really nothing to worry about as it is perfectly natural for cats and dogs to get ticks – we literally pick about 3 off per day of our dogs in spring, but we are on a farm so they are exposed more :)

this advice is for humans, although the mention of lyme disease does affect cats as well – here is an advice site about cats with the disease and a list of symptoms to look out for:

(we dont really get that in the UK)
In future, buy a tick remover – ours is an "O tom tick remover":

tick head removal in a dog body is off head might be attached?

Posted on July 5th, 2010 by admin

My daughter had noticed that my dog had this thing by his ear. it was huge and it was greenish white in color. She pulled it off and showed me here it was a tick. i could not tell if the head was with it or not seeming that it had black colored slimy stuff coming from where the head should be. I looked at the spot where she had pulled it. Of course its all puffy and I can not tell if there is a head there. I do not have the money for a vet and if I did it’s the holiday weekend. Can someone tell me how am I to know if there is a head under that skin and how can I remove the head my self ? I had used tweezers to poke around and I still cannot see anything. I am afraid by the look of it that there possibly is a head underneath. It does not look irritated nor does it appear to have the bulls eye look of lime disease
how will i know if my dog gets lymes before i can get him to the vet

Don’t worry about it. Your daughter killed it when she pulled it off. The head will fall out eventually. I would only be worried if the area becomes infected after a few days (which rarely happens)

Would a tick cause soft stools?

Posted on July 1st, 2010 by admin

I think my puppy might have a tick. he has a black bump really close to his eye so I am having a hard time getting him to sit still so I can examine it closely. I was a couple of days late with his Frontline – so I gave it to him right away today. If it is a tick will that dose kill it? If not, what is your best suggested method for tick removal. All my life having dogs and only once has one of them had a tick and my brother took that one off.

He has had very soft stools all day – no other indication of sickness of behavior changes. Could the diarrhea be an indication?

i would not think so. i would try to give the dog a dose of worm medication.

when plucking a tick, does the head of the tick stay under the surface of the skin?

Posted on June 27th, 2010 by admin

I found a load of ticks on my German Shepard / Golden Retriever about 2 weeks ago so I immediately bathed him with flea / tick removal soap and plucked off the ticks I saw. Well I went to feed him and yet saw another one. How do I get rid of these ticks? We hired an exterminator to spray the yard but he still has them. We also apply this medicine on his skin once a month but it doesn’t seem to work.(we started about 2 or 3 months ago when we 1st noticed the ticks) So my question is when plucking a tick, does the head stay in the skin? And how do I get rid of them the fastest way? cause were moving soon and I want them to be gone before we put him in the new yard. (to prevent further breeding in the grass and stuff) He only has ticks and not fleas.

You should try to remove the head along with the body. Take a tweezers and go as close to his skin as possible. Grab the tick tightly and pull slowly but firmly. Some of the dogs tissue will pull out with the tick and there will be a bump where the tick was for a while, but it should be fine. Remove them as soon as possible to avoid contacting lyme disease.
