How to remove a tick from a dog?

Posted on June 24th, 2010 by admin

My dog has a tick. How do I remove it?

take a tweezers and locate the tick.
when you find it pull as much hair back as you can so you have a clear view.
take the tweezers and pinch as close to the skin as possible (not too hard, you don’t want to pinch any parts off the tick that could get stuck in the dog) and gently and slowly pull away from the skin
once you have the tick put it in a small plastic bag and place it in the freezer (keep this for about 2 weeks incase your dog develops any odd symptoms that you’d want to get checked out by a vet)

good luck

how to remove ticks? Easy ways?

Posted on June 20th, 2010 by admin

My dog has a tick on his side and rather than pay a huge amount of money to a vet to remove it, i’d like to do it myself. What is the easiest way to safely remove a tick and not leave the head?

Please what ever you don’t try and burn it off that is dangerous as you could burn the dog. You can get a cheap tool from you vets to remove them. Threy aren’t very expensive and are design to remove ticks.

How do I get my 70 lb dog to lay still while I remove a tick?

Posted on June 18th, 2010 by admin

It’s underneath his tail in a sensitive area. He’s good about me probing and picking if need be any where else on his body. But this one has got me trying to wrestle him, and if I can avoid an expensive vet visit, I sure would like to…

yes, get someone to help you….you need someone on the head end….short tie him up with collar and leash where there is good light, grasp his tail, the person on the collar puts their arm under his belly to hold him standing, you grasp his tail with left hand, grab the tick with right hand and twist it off…..or call a groomer….less expensive :)

How to remove a tick from a cat?

Posted on June 15th, 2010 by admin

My long haired cat has got the mother of all ticks attached to her back where her tail starts. What should I do? Please help so that I can resolve the problem and the cat can come back indoors.
Her name is Foxy Woo!

To pull it off, grab it close to where it is attached to her skin and just pull. This will ensure that you will get the head of the tick out of her. If you feel more comfortable, you can do this with tweezers. You can also do as the others said and use Vaseline. But when you do this be sure to wash the Vaseline off of your cat after the tick dies. If you use either of these methods, you will want to flush the tick after removing it.

What does your skin look like after you remove a tick that has been attached?

Posted on June 7th, 2010 by admin

The tick is a male nymph American Dog Tick. I scratched the back of my head and thought it was a scab on my head and pulled it off. The tick is not alive and it is not engorged. I know it has been dead (maybe by washing my hair or the hair dryer) because the tick is flat and dried up. However, I know it was attached because I heard it popped when I pulled it off. The head is still attached to the tick but when my grandmother inspected it, there is a distinctive bite mark on the back of my head and a kind of splotchy rash that trails to the nape of my neck – straight down. The rash is square in shape and does not extend above or to the side of the original bite – just straight down about 4 inches. Is this normal? No fever, no bulls eye rash, no aching but I have no idea how long it was attached or how long it had been dead. And Y E S – I’m still GROSSED OUT and all icked out about it. I know it’s not Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain Fever. Too soon for that…. :) I hope… :)
It’s not Lyme Disease – American Dog Ticks don’t carry Lyme. It’s not Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, the gestation period for rash is several days out and it genereally doesn’t affect the bitten area, the hands and soles of the feet. Just checking to see if rash is normal. I can’t find anything regarding a rash around the bitten area.

The fact that you heard a "pop" suggests that the tick was engorged and my guess is the "rash" you have is from scratching your head before you found the tic.

Or it is the result of the toxin released by the tick upon attachment which will pass soon.
Clean it with peroxide and watch it. There are many diseases that ticks carry and while the dog tick is pretty harmless any bite should not be ignored.

I am a person who has been disbaled by Lyme disease. My advice is to be careful. Where there are dog ticks there are deer ticks.
