This was a case where Reynolds Pest Management had an opportunity to use its expertise in pest control for this infestation of Brown Dog Ticks in a Martin County Florida home. This tick problem had to be addressed on multiple occasions which is often the case at the homes we treat on The Treasure Coast, and in Palm Beach County, Florida.
Ticks
Appearance:
Ticks come in a variety of colors as regards specific species. Smaller than a sunflower seed (1/8 inch); yet if engorged with blood, adults can be up to 5/8-inch long. Nymphal (or immature) ticks are less than 1/16-inch. Common problem ticks include the American dog tick, deer or black legged tick and lone star tick.
Habit:
While some species require moisture to survive, others can and do in more arid environments. They habituate near wooded and highly vegetated areas.
Diet:
They consume blood meals during all of the four developmental stages in a tick’s lifecycle. All females and males of most species feed on blood of mammals, birds and reptiles.
Reproduction:
From egg and larvae, to nymph and adult; ticks have only six legs during their larval stage and eight legs during the nymphal and adult stages. A tick’s life cycle will support and transfer pathogens (organisms that cause diseases) in the animals they infect and can be passed through all stages of a tick’s life cycle.

Be sure not use this method on carpet as it has the ability to decrease the longevity of carpet fabric. I’ve been impressed with some information that I recently found on another site – http://www.nopetstains.com.

Put the tick in a jar filled with rubbing alcohol and save it for later identification if necessary.
Wash the area of the tick bite with a lot of warm water and soap. A mild dishwashing soap, such as Ivory, works well.
If a bite becomes irritated, apply an antibiotic ointment, such as bacitracin or polymyxin B sulfate, and cover it with an adhesive bandage. The ointment will keep the bite from sticking to the bandage. Note: Stop using the ointment if the skin under the bandage begins to itch or a rash develops. The ointment may be causing a skin reaction.
My boss and I are arguing over what is worse to get a tick bite or a mosquito bite. He says he is much more afraid he will get a disease from a mosquito than a tick. I disagree I would be more scared to get bitten by a tick. Whats your opinion and why?
Thanks to everyone who answered!
Well ticks can carry lyme disease and mosquitos west nile, so take your pick. LOL But yeah having a tick burrow himself in my skin kinda freaks me out too.
I pulled the tick off with twezzers and it turned red. I didn’t pay much attention to it until a few day back and now it fells as if the bite mark is scabing, is this normal?
wow that means i’m lucky as hell (in response to kelle)
when i pulled a tick off, a while back (three years ago), same thing happened to me but I knew
that the head was still in my skin – the condition also did a hard scab effect…
I couldn’t afford going to the doctor…so i left it there…
now: nothing happened…no more hardness…no more scab…. just a scar the size of a dot… and no lyme disease
I would go to the doctors just in case
I just finished properly removing a tick with tweezers. I read that triple antibiotic is good for tick bites, and that it was safe on cats, should I apply some? (I might not have any, but i DO have something like neosporin) Licking off anything I apply shouldn’t be a big problem, as it is on the back/side of his neck and under where his collar usually is. Give me your best answer; I want to know I’m not doing anything dangerous to my cat.
Also, the tick is dead.
Hydrogen Peroxide to bring out the head of the tick. It is not visible to your eye the head but it can get into the bloodstream of your kitty. Then antibotic. Oh yeah if you dotn know this catch the tick on fire to make it die.
I have a friend who removed one, now she has a red bump where the tick had been and also it is itching badly.
Sound like part of the tick might be still inside, common problem if you just try and pull them out. This can lead to a nasty infection if left untreated. I would see a doctor if the symptoms don’t get better. Also keep in mind ticks can carry nasty diseases.
Next time you get a tick embedded in you skin touch a lit cigarette or hot match head to it’s back side, it’ll let go. I’ve also heard of people smearing them with ointment which blocks their breathing resulting in them withdrawing.
