dog/tick/removal???

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

I have a silky terrier (think a yorkie but slightly larger) and his hair was very matted…my fault, i know…anyways i shaved a good amount of his hair off today and noticed what appears to be a tick on the top of his head-ALMOST near his eye…it’s gotten considerely larger (i noticed a little bump there a while back but didn’t think much of it)

My question is…

How do you sucessfully remove a tick? Should I even attempt? Do those flea/TICK baths really make a difference? Or do you recommend a trip to the vet?

Yes remove the tick. Take a pair of sterile tweezers. Grip the tick by the head as close to the skin as your can. Pull it out with a good yank. check to make sure you got all of the tick out. Any pieces of the head left in the skin will cause an infection. Keep the tick and make your dog a vet appointment. The vet can run a test to see if the tick was a carrier for Lyme. If it was your dog will need to be tested. Lyme disease is treated in dogs with a 2 week course of pills. It really is essential that your dog get looked at a.s.a.p. because if your dog has Lyme you want it treated before it causes any problems.

P.S. Do not try to suffucate the tick with vasiline or any other substance. Ticks do not breathe often enough for this method to work.

The flea part of the shampoo works but not the tick. If you do use flea shampoo get the one with the growth regulator in it. This will kill fleas of every age and kill the eggs.

What is the best natural way to prevent tick-bites?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

Rub canola oil over the exposed parts of your skin when entering a wooded area where ticks would be. Or wear long sleeves, a high fitting jersey and shirt and wear something to protect your head and neck.
Another way is not wearing a wrist watch to avoid the ticks.

How to care for a tick bite?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

My dear friend, Amy, just came to me and said that her other half got bitten on his wanker by a tick. So, can anyone tell me what she should do to treat it? It was removed, but what else should be done? She and I have no clue as to how to treat it, or IF we should treat it.
Thanks in advance.

My mom had a tick bite…had to go to the dr – have it lanced and squeezed – then antibiotics.
She ignored it for about a week, it got really red & swollen.
I would just watch it – make sure it doesnt show any of these symptoms

How do you know for sure if you have Lyme disease?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

Apparently; this disease is very difficult to diagnose! And I know of alot of people who have been to the doctor (including myself) with what is thought to be sinus infections. I spent alot of time outdoors working; camping and fishing. And alot of my friends have the same symptoms that I had before they put me on an antibiotic. I seem to be gradually doing better. The symtoms I hear alot of them complain about is mainly a stiff neck, swollen glands in the neck, a slight rash, and confusion. And can having lime disease have an impact on your mental health? I mean since it seems to affect the nervous system you would think that it could. Its been 2 years since I took the antibiotic. But they say that Lyme disease is a very stubborn illness and can last for years. Is this true? I also had a reaction to the antibiotic. I’m allergic to Penicillin so; they gave me the Z – Pack. I am not allegic to this antibiotic.

The link above is an example.

Lyme Disease is definitively diagnosed using an antibody test, confirmed by a test called a Western Blot, though the characteristic rash is sometimes enough for a doctor to make a diagnosis.

Treatment with antibiotics kills all of the bacteria that cause Lyme Disease, but arthritis symptoms may continue because of the damage they do.

In response to your mental health question, Lyme Disease is known to sometimes cause dementia and fatigue.

I’m glad to hear that you are feeling better and I hope your health continues to improve.

how can i remove fleas or ticks from my backyard for my dog?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

My dog has been having fleas and ticks on him but we don’t know how to completely remove them from the backyard. The yard doesn’t have too much grass, the majority is dirt. What is the best solution for removing them?

I would put frontline on your dog. It it a protective liqued you put on his neck once a month that prevents ticks and fleas from biting him or getting on him! Check your vet or your local pet store to get some! It work great on my dogs. Hope that helps!

properly removing a tick?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

i know its important to remove the head of the tick along with the body. if its not removed properly, it can get infected. i know i need to use tweezers. i was taught to burn the site of the bite to make sure the head is out and burn the tick. then swab the wound with alcohol. i didnt know if there were other ways though?

Use the lit end of a cigarette. That way the whole tick will come out.

How do I remove a tick from the outer part of my dogs ear?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

I have heard to use rubbing alcohol or a match. I have never done this before. I never even have seen a tick in-person on a dogs ear.

take a cotton ball, soak it in alcohol, put it over the tick and hold there for a minute or two then gently pull off. if he has one he probably has more

what are the effects and signs of "lime disease"?

Posted on April 30th, 2010 by admin

skin symptoms of lime disease ,both kinds of lime disease, one that is not tested ofter?

I have had late stage lyme disease for 7 years. I had it for a year and a half (approximately) before they found it, so I had a really bad case. Generally, when people are bitten, the deer or lyme tick have to stay on them for 3 days to be able to get the virus. A bulls-eye rash is often found somewhere on the skin, along with flu like symptoms. I had the symptoms when I first got it, but no rash, so they passed it off as a virus.

If you catch it within 3 months, you can treat it with oral antibiotics and you can get rid of it for good. After that, it gets more complicated. 3 months is the general rule, but some with lyme disease for 5 months may be cured. Usually when it is bad, such as late stage, you are on IV for 6-8 weeks. However, if you have late stage, such as myself, there is no cure and you will have to live with the symptoms for the rest of your life with occasional or common "flare-ups" A flare up is when it feels like you have the initial disease all over again, times twenty…it’s painful. I’m in one right now.

Lyme disease affects the nervous system, brain, and heart. I am 22 and will need a heart valve replacement soon. My brain has been affected and I now have three disorders all caused by lyme disease. My nervous system was seriously affected, I have too many problems to name. But lyme disease is serious, so if you think you have it, go to the doctor immediately.

This reply is not meant to be a sob story, but I want people out there to realize how serious lyme disease is. If you don’t catch it, or protect yourself from it, you can have serious complications for life.
